Want platinum perks without applying for an expensive platinum credit card? With a platinum debit card you can.
Well, up to a point anyway. While platinum debit card perks don’t extend to airport lounge access or hotel upgrades, they can provide handy extras in the form of complimentary insurances, personal concierge services and cashback on card spending.
There are currently three platinum debit cards on the market that we’re aware of. Here’s what you need to know.
NAB Platinum Visa Debit Card
With the NAB Platinum Visa Debit Card, you get everything offered on a NAB Visa Debit card, with some nice extras on the side.
- When you use your card overseas, or when shopping online with an international retailer, you will pay no foreign currency fee.
- Help is on hand 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with the NAB Concierge Service providing you with your very own travel and lifestyle assistant.
- You can earn 1% cashback on contactless purchases, up to a limit of $10 per month.
- Providing peace of mind, the card offers access to a range of complimentary insurances, which include:
- Overseas travel insurance
- Transport accident insurance
- Interstate flight inconvenience insurance
- Domestic hotel burglary insurance
- Purchase protection insurance
- Extended warranty insurance
- Price protection insurance
The NAB Platinum Visa Debit Card can be linked to a new or existing NAB Classic Banking account. It comes with a $10 monthly card fee. While you can potentially earn this fee back in cashback, that would require a $1,000 monthly spend in contactless payments.
Bankwest Platinum Debit Mastercard
Again, the Bankwest Platinum Debit Mastercard offers the same features as the bank’s standard Debit Mastercard, with a few platinum perks to spice things up.
- You can access Purchase Security Insurance to benefit from 90 days of insurance covering you against loss, theft or damage around the world on eligible card purchases.
- You can benefit from Extended Warranty Insurance on eligible purchases made in Australia, providing up to twelve months extended warranty.
You can link the Bankwest Platinum Debit Mastercard to a number of Bankwest transaction accounts, including the Easy Transaction Account, Qantas Transaction Account, Rewards Transaction Account, Hero Transaction Account, Retirement Advantage Account, and the Offset Transaction Account.
Macquarie Bank Platinum Transaction Account
The Macquarie Bank Platinum Transaction Account is an award-winner, having been given a 5-star Canstar rating for Outstanding Value Travel Debit Card for 2019/2020. Perks include:
- When spending in a foreign currency, you will receive the Mastercard foreign exchange rate, and you will pay no foreign currency fee.
- You will have your own personal assistant, with access to a personal concierge service 24/7.
- You can benefit from 90-day theft and damage protection on eligible purchases, and stolen wallet protection up to $500.
- Sync your card to your mobile wallet via Apple Pay, Google Pay, Fitbit Pay and Garmin Pay.
- Enjoy discounts of up to 10% on eGift cards to use at over 50 leading retailers across Australia with Macquarie Marketplace.
With this platinum debit card and transaction account there doesn’t seem to be any monthly fees, and the bank states there is no minimum monthly deposit. There are no transaction fees or dishonour fees, and the bank will not charge you ATM fees anywhere in the world. You can get free access to any rediATM in Australia, with a refund on fees incurred at all other ATMs in Australia.
Time To Choose?

December 16, 2023When using at ATM with this card, what option do I choose?
admin
December 18, 2023Hi Janet, there are a few cards listed on this page, so I’m not sure which one you have. Typically you would choose the Savings account for a debit card, but that may change depending on what other accounts you have with the bank. The bank will let you know when you receive your card, or you can call to double check. Thanks Janet!
Peter Kelly
October 27, 2023Hi. What is the daily limit you can withdraw using the platinum debit card?
admin
November 9, 2023Hi Peter, each institution has their own limits. I suggest contacting your card issuer directly to check the daily limit of cash withdrawal as it varies.

September 14, 2023As an existing customer, can I get a Debit Card from MBL?
admin
September 18, 2023Hi Gunter! You’ll need to open a transaction account with Macquarie to get a debit card (if you already have an account, you should have gotten a debit card sent to you). Macquarie’s Everyday Transaction account automatically comes with a Platinum card. Thanks Gunter!

July 22, 2023How can I open A Macquarie platinum debit card ? What are fee applied when u spend in oversea using this debit card ? I do not have account in Macquarie bank.
admin
July 25, 2023Hi Show Yen, Macquarie has updated its accounts and the Macquarie Transaction account now has zero fees anywhere in the world. You might be charged an ATM fee by the merchant, but not by Macquarie. You can go to Macquarie’s website to apply (you just need to be over 12 and have a permanent Australian residential address). Thanks Show Yen!

July 20, 2023i am trying to compare travel cards, can you please explain what is an international spend rate?
admin
July 21, 2023Hi Maria, I’d be glad to explain that for you. International spend rate actually refers to fees that you’ll be charged for transactions you make overseas or at an overseas merchant within Australia. It’s usually a percentage of the transaction amount.

March 27, 2023When you say ‘no foreign currency fees’ does that also mean no currency Conversion fee if I withdraw from an atm using Aud to convert to local currency.
admin
March 28, 2023Hi Ann, yes- no foreign currency fees and no currency conversion fees are the same. These fees are imposed to cover the expense of converting foreign currency to local currency. For example, you have an Australian debit card and you use it in the US to pay for purchases, you will normally be charged a fee between 2-4% for converting AUD to USD however, if your debit card offers 0% foreign fees, then such fee will be waived. I hope this answers your question.
