St. George started out as a building society and became one of the largest building societies in Australia before converting into a bank in 1992. It still retains its focus as a consumer oriented financial institution. They stress their customer service levels as the point that marks them out from other banks. They owned by the second largest bank in Australia, Westpac. St. George continues to maintain its own brand, branches and products.
St. George bank offers Visa debit cards on a number of current accounts. These include the Complete Freedom Account, the SENSE current account, the Express Freedom Account, the Complete Freedom Student Account and the Retirement Access Plus Account. The Complete Freedom account is largely a free current account aimed at high earners. The Complete Freedom Student account is a similar account aimed at student's and apprentices but with fewer offers. There Express Freedom account is a Freedom account aimed at lower earners, with a monthly fee of $3 and free banking otherwise. The SENSE account is an integrated savings and current account.
As it is a Visa card it is widely accepted both in Australia and abroad, in up to 29 million outlets. This means that is accepted in the same way that a credit card would be in many parts of the world, in the way that an EFTPOS card would not be. The card can also be used without any charges on the extensive Westpac ATM network, that as well as Westpac and St. George also includes the Bank SA brand. As it is a Visa card it can also be used on the internet in the same way as a credit card would be used. Visa also offers a verified by Visa service on many of the larger internet payment sites which offers an added level of security by asking registered users for an extra password before allowing the transaction. St. George also operates its own online security programme.
Visa also operates a rewards programme, known as Visa preferred services. This gives a range of further benefits for a card holder including discounts on hotels, and the ability to get tickets for concerts and sporting events before they go into general circulation. They also offer discounts on many of these tickets as well as some special offers on cinema tickets. The programme is run through Visa and not St. George and requires a separate registration.
