Our guide to: Tips

Last updated on: 12/06/2023

Debit cards certainly are a convenient and secure way to pay for things, but they also come with some risks and responsibilities. Here’s some of my tips to help you use your debit card wisely and safely.

  • Check your account statements regularly. It’s important to monitor your debit card transactions and balance regularly, either online or by phone. If you still get paper statements you can also do this by your mail. By staying diligent, you can spot any errors or unauthorised charges and report them to your bank immediately. If you notice any suspicious activity on your account, contact your bank and/or the police right away.
  • Protect your card from fraud and theft. Always keep your debit card in a safe place and never let anyone else use it. When you use your card at an ATM or the shops, always cover your PIN from prying eyes and cameras. Be wary of any devices or signs that look weird, as they could be skimming devices that capture your card details. And most importantly, if you lose your card or it is stolen, report it to your bank immediately and cancel it.
  • Choose a strong PIN and keep it secret. 100% make sure you choose a PIN that is hard to guess and not related to your personal information. Never share your PIN with anyone, not even your family or friends. If you suspect that someone knows your PIN, change it as soon as possible in your providers app.
  • Know your rights and responsibilities. As a debit card user, you have certain rights and responsibilities under the ePayments Code, which regulates electronic payments in Australia. For example, you have the right to dispute any unauthorized or mistaken transactions on your account and get a refund if you are not liable for them. However, you also have the responsibility to protect your card and PIN from misuse and notify your bank promptly of any problems. You can find out more about the ePayments Code on the ASIC website.

So that’s just a few tips, and below you’ll find more in-depth articles on debit card tips.
