The NAB Platinum Visa Debit Card provides all the benefits of using debit, with some seriously appealing platinum perks on the side.
What’s great?
For the most part, debit cards are pretty basic. While they may let you use your own money to pay for stuff, they don’t tend to offer much on the side. Not so the NAB Platinum Visa Debit Card. Linked to a NAB Classic Banking account, the NAB Platinum Visa Debit Card combines all the benefits you get when using a debit card, with some of the more exciting extras usually reserved for platinum credit card users.
Here’s what you need to know about the NAB Platinum Visa Debit Card.
Debit Card Features
As you would expect, the NAB Platinum Visa Debit Card allows you access to everything you’d get on a classic debit card. With worldwide acceptance through the Visa network, you can use the card online, in person and to withdraw cash at the ATM. Just like the NAB Visa Debit Card, it offers fee free withdrawals at more than 4,000 ATMs, $0 overdrawn fees, account management via the NAB app, and compatibility with Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Google Pay, Garmin Pay and Fitbit Pay.
No International Transaction Fees
But, unlike the NAB Visa Debit Card (and most other debit cards on the market), the NAB Platinum Visa Debit Card doesn’t charge an international transaction fee. That means if you use your card to buy stuff online in a currency other than AUD, or you pay in person with your card overseas, you will pay no currency conversion fee on the transaction.
Complimentary Insurances (now includes COVID-19 cover)
Complimentary insurance covers are usually reserved for platinum credit card users. But, with the NAB Platinum Visa Debit Card in your wallet, you will have access to a wide range of travel and purchase insurances, helping you stay protected as you use your card. Insurances include:
- • Overseas travel insurance
- • Domestic travel insurance
- • Rental vehicle excess in Australia insurance
- • Purchase protection insurance
- • Extended warranty insurance
There is small print, of course, so you will need to read the terms and conditions if you want to make the most of the cover on offer. For example, you’ll need to use your card to cover at least $500 of your trip so that you, your spouse and your dependent children are covered.
NAB Concierge Service
Providing access to a concierge service is another common extra on higher-end credit cards. But, with the NAB Platinum Visa Debit Card, you can have your own personal concierge too. Described by NAB as a travel and lifestyle assistant, the NAB Concierge Service is available to cardholders 24/7, offering assistance with travel bookings, hotel reservations, gift buying and more.
Cashback on Contactless
Helping to cover the card’s monthly fee, the NAB Platinum Visa Debit Card currently lets you earn cashback on contactless payments up to $10 each month. Basically, this feature gives you 1% cashback on all contactless payments made using the card, up to $1,000 in each calendar month, equating to a maximum of $10.
What’s worth considering?
The main thing to think about before you apply for the NAB Platinum Visa Debit Card is its monthly fee. As a cardholder, you will pay a monthly fee of $10, which comes to $120 per year. In short, you are paying for those extras, so if you want to get good value from the card, you’ll need to make good use of its features.
Furthermore, it's essential to note that applicants must be at least 18 years old to apply for the NAB Platinum Visa Debit Card.
Why should you choose it?
Want a debit card with platinum credit card extras? The NAB Platinum Visa Debit Card could be for you. Offering many of the perks you would see on a platinum credit card, it lets you enjoy these extras while still using your own money to pay for stuff, rather than the bank’s. As long as you keep in mind the monthly fee (which you can earn back spending $1,000 per month on contactless payments), you could enjoy real value using this card.

October 24, 2023A few of the answers regarding international ATM fees on this page have contradictory answers. In some answers, you say $5 per withdrawal, in other answers you say no fees for international atm withdrawals. No wonder people are dissatisfied with Aussie banks. Can we please get a final answer. Does withdrawing money from an overseas ATM with this card cost anything?
admin
October 25, 2023Hi Wayne, thanks for your message. You’re currently on Debitcards.com.au, a debit card comparison site in Australia. Regarding your question, I’ve checked and the NAB Platinum Visa debit card does incur a $5 fee for overseas cash withdrawals, in addition to any fees imposed by the international ATM operator. This card though does not charge a withdrawal fee at over 7,000 ATMs within Australia.

October 9, 2023If i pay a deposit for a plane ticket for my son using my visa platinum card and we have to cancel say due to medical reasons, is this payment covered by the travel insurance ?
admin
October 13, 2023Hi Maz, it may be that your cover only activates on the day you begin your journey. You can read the terms in the NAB travel insurance PDS, or give them a call directly to be sure on 1300 308 175.

August 30, 2023Hi, I understand there are no transaction fees for overseas purchases, but if I have Australian dollars in my account and I wish to spend that in Korean Won in South Korea, what is your conversion rate?
admin
September 5, 2023Hi Holly, we’re not NAB but I can help you with this question! The conversion rate is Visa’s, which you can check on its Foreign Exchange Rate Calculator. That will give you real-time conversion rates.

August 25, 2023Does it cover Medical and hospital
admin
August 30, 2023Hi David, NAB insurance is underwritten by Allianz and is the same complimentary insurance you’d get on one of its top-tier credit cards. It does cover some overseas medical and hospital expenses, but you’d need to read the PDS to make sure it suits what you’re after specifically. Thanks David!
David
August 24, 2023Can you use overseas atms with this debit card and does it cost
admin
August 30, 2023Hi David, NAB’s terms say you’ll be charged $5 per overseas withdrawal from an ATM and $1 for a balance enquiry. The ATM operator may also charge you a fee. However NAB does waive the international transaction fee on its platinum debit cards.
Alan Reid
August 23, 2023Hi there, I am a 61 year old self funded retiree. My enquiries are:
1. What rules apply for pre-existing health conditions in respect of the travel insurance.
2. Is my defacto spouse covered for travel insurance, or will my spouse require her own Premium debit card?
Kind regards.
Alan.
admin
August 23, 2023Hi Alan, those are good questions! I looked into this for you and see that as the primary cardholder, you may be eligible for travel insurance coverage. And if you’re eligible, this automatically makes your wife eligible too provided she has met the eligibility criteria. As for pre-existing conditions, I suggest checking NAB’s official insurance coverage PDS here for more information and general exclusions.

July 25, 2023Hi,
How long is the contract for a Platinum Visa Debit card? Do we need to hold it for a minimum length of time?
Thanks.
admin
July 26, 2023Hi Dragan, I checked this for you and there’s no mention of any contract related to the NAB Platinum Visa debit card. Therefore, if you choose to close your account, you can inform NAB about your decision.

July 11, 2023I already have a Premium Debit card. Your blurb says I can use it at any of more than 7,000 ATMs. Is that only within Australia or does the 7,000 include ATMs in countries such as Italy, Greece, and Egypt?
admin
July 12, 2023Hi Mark, good question! I checked this for you and it states that you get zero withdrawal fee at more than 7,000 ATMS across Australia. As for withdrawing overseas, you can still do that where Visa is accepted. Please note though that some of the ATM providers may charge a fee.
Olivia
June 15, 2023Hi, Is there unlimited no fees on international purchases or is there a limit to how much you can spend without being charged international fees?
admin
June 15, 2023Hi Olivia, the NAB Platinum Visa debit card is specifically made so it can be used to make purchases outside Australia (or within Australia with overseas merchants) and not cop foreign fees. 🙂

Chris
May 3, 2023I currently hold a NAB Qantas Visa Card and am travelling to Europe for 2 months. I am wanting to withdraw cash occasionally from ATM’s and obviously use tap and go features while away for purchases etc. Is it better for me to apply for the Platinum Card to avoid those exy fees and use my existing Visa card as a backup?
admin
May 4, 2023Hi Chris, sounds like you’ve got a great trip planned. The NAB Platinum Visa is a debit card so you’ll only be spending your money. If you withdraw cash from your credit card you’ll get stung with interest and fees. If you’re worried about foreign transaction fees, you can compare a range of debit cards with no foreign transaction fees for this. Also we share some of our tips for travelling with debit cards. Happy travels!

April 21, 2023what pass” as pre travel purchase for the 500$ insurance activation? hotel bookings?
admin
April 24, 2023Hi Halie, the card’s PDS does include overseas accommodation as part of the eligibility criteria. Here’s the wording: “before leaving Australia you spend at least $500 on your prepaid travel costs (i.e. your travel costs that you pay for before leaving Australia) and you charge these costs (e.g. cost of your overseas travel ticket; and/or airport/departure taxes; and/or your prepaid overseas accommodation/ travel; and/or your other prepaid overseas itinerary items) to the accountholder’s card account.” You can see the PDS here. Have a great trip!

March 5, 2023are you required to spend a certain amount of dollars to validate for travel insurance on your platinum visa debit account.
admin
March 6, 2023Hi Lorraine, I checked this for you and it states that you must spend at least $500 on your prepaid travel costs and charged these to the accountholder’s card account, along with the other usual eligibility requirements like being an Australian resident and are 91 years old at the time your trip starts. You can check NAB’s insurance policy booklet for the terms, conditions, and exclusions.
Raja
February 11, 2023Hi
I am planning on travelling to Israel and Turkey in mid March. I currently have a CC with another bank, but am charged everytime I use it overseas, especially if I want to withdraw cash. Here are my questions….
1. So I need to open a NAB Classic Banking account from which the Debit Card will be linked. So lets say I put in 5 K, I will use it as a Debit account to spend, and can top it up anytime from my current bank account?
2. I only plan to use this card when I go overseas, which is perhaps twice a year. Can I cancel the card when I come back ? And get another one when I go again ?
3. If I take money out of an ATM overseas ( EUR) will I be hit with a ATM transaction fee/ currency conversion fee ?
4. If I decide to go ahead, how soon can I access the card ?
admin
February 13, 2023Hi Raja! NAB debit accounts can be closed via the App, using their Live Chat service. However, I’m not sure what their stance is on reopening the account later, and especially doing it on multiple occasions. If you use your card to withdraw cash from an ATM overseas, you will be charged a $5 cash withdrawal fee plus 3% of the withdrawal amount (the $0 fees apply to international purchases only, not withdrawals). Since you have a few very specific questions, it’s probably a good idea to get onto NAB directly and make sure you’ve got all the info you need. Their customer service number is 13 22 65. All the best on your travels Raja!
Peter
December 31, 2022What will happen to my original debit card that is linked to the same account if I choose to apply for the platinum?
admin
January 3, 2023Hi Peter, depending on what happens when you sign up, you can choose to link a card to an account. Sometimes you can press “CHQ” at the EFTPOS machine to use a secondary account. Hope that helps!
Peter
December 31, 2022Is there a minimum amount of time required to pay for this card if I choose to cancel the platinum services before a year is over.
admin
January 3, 2023Hi Peter, this card is just like a bank account. There’s no minimum period you need to keep the card for. As long as you don’t owe NAB money, you can cancel it.

December 8, 2022Hi Ilyas, I checked NAB Platinum Visa debit card’s terms and it looks like you can use the card anywhere where a Visa card is accepted as it offers a no foreign fee on purchases.

admin
November 16, 2022Hi Tanya, Qantas’s website says you can link a debit card to your Qantas Frequent Flyer membership (any card with a Mastercard or Visa logo). You can see the page here for more info. If in doubt, contact NAB or Qantas directly. Don’t forget you can also earn points on your Woolworths Everyday Rewards card and convert them to Qantas Points too. Thanks Tanya!
