Why does my debit card get declined?

Amy Last updated on March 18th, 2025

Having a debit card declined can be puzzling, but there are a number of reasons why a debit card may be declined. One of the most common reasons for declining a debit card is that the card has expired. What exactly are your options when your card is declined?
So you’ve been given the dreaded “card declined” message when you’ve gone to buy your groceries. You know you definitely have money in the account, so what else could be the problem?

There are many reasons why your card might not work, so here’s some things to check and easily fix.

Your card has expired

All debit cards have their expiration date printed on either the front of the card, or the back. If your card has expired then it’s not going to work. Hopefully you’ve already received your new card in the mail, so make sure that’s it activated and ready to go.

This will mean that the debit card is no longer being used and a replacement has been sent.  The debit card expiry date will show on the card (often with either the date the card started or the issue number).  This will mean that the card is no longer active.  It can sometimes be the case that the card has been expired and cancelled and no replacement sent, in these cases the bank should be contacted as soon as possible.

It may be the case that the replacement has been sent not because the card has expired, but because the card user has requested that the replacement card should be sent out.  This will mean that the current card will be invalidated.  It is standard practice to cancel a card when a replacement card has been sent out so as to cut down on fraud.

One of the reasons why people ask for a replacement card is because their card has been lost, the card is reported missing and then the card is found again.  Even though the card is found it will now have been cancelled.  With most banks the security procedures dictate that it can not be activated again and the user will have to apply for a new card.  It can also be the case that a user wants a new design on their debit card and requests the debit card; in these cases the old debit card will also be cancelled.

Check your balance

Another reason why there could be a declined debit card is that there are insufficient funds in the underlying account. Debit cards do not have funds of their own and they rely on underlying accounts. Sometimes you might have miscalculated how much money you have left in your account. Or you’ve forgotten about a pending transaction that hasn’t cleared yet.

If you have your phone on you, you can quickly check your balance, and if you have multiple accounts, you could move some money to your debit card account so you can continue shopping.

Daily spending caps

Another reason for a card to be declined is if the card is going to go over its daily spending limit.  Cards can also be declined if the security has been compromised, the card has been cloned or there is thought to be some suspicion of fraud (even if this proves to be groundless). Most banks have a daily transaction limit, so check your account to see if you’ve maxed it out.

Smart tips to stay safe

It’s definitely not the end of the world if your debit card is declined and hopefully these tips will help protect you in the future. You should always keep your card safe and monitor your transactions for fraud. If you have any major concerns you should always contact your bank for help!

Why will my debit card refuse to work when I use it online but not anywhere else?

Hi Peter, it may be an extra security feature on the card that does not allow it to be used online. I would call your bank directly or go into a branch to sort out. I’m sure they should be able to unblock it. If not, then move to a bank that can.
