Daily limits on debit cards are when a debit card provider will only allow a certain amount of money out per day. This can mean that debit card transactions will be limited in the day.
The way a daily limit works is that the money that is spent throughout a day is monitored. If the amount goes over a certain pre set limit then further transactions will be stopped in that day. If there are further transactions that will take the debit card over that daily limit then further transactions will be refused when the debit card is presented. This will happen even if there is money in the account.
There is no permanent mark on the debit card and it can be used again. If the debit card is presented again the next day then the card will be accepted and the funds will leave the account. It is also the case that there will be other ways of getting money out of the account.
The reason for there being daily limits on debit cards is as an anti-fraud measure. Experience has shown that debit cards are used very heavily after a debit card has been stolen or cloned in order to get as much money as possible before the debit card is deactivated. This will not mean that the daily limit will stop the fraud, but the daily limit will dampen down any damage caused by the fraud.
It is a good idea for a card holder to be aware of what their daily limit is on their debit card. This will mean that the debit card holder is less likely to find that their transactions are turned down as measures can be taken if this is likely to happen.
One option is to raise the debit card limit temporarily. This will not always be possible, but if a person knows that they will be using the debit card in a way that they will have more spending on the card ten they can try to get it raised.
Another option is to delay the payment until the next day. This will need the cooperation of the shop in order to charge it later, although the alternative is to buy the product on the next day.
There are other ways of paying for items including by cheque and by money transfer. These may not have daily limits.
