The Citibank Plus Account Debit Card Review

Committed to keeping costs down for its customers, Citibank charges no monthly fees, no dishonour fees and no overdrawn fees on its Citibank Plus Account. Basic in style, this account keeps things simple, allowing accountholders to access their cash using a Citibank Plus Account Debit Card, while benefiting from certain handy features, such as the Citibank Dining Program.

What’s great?

As you compare your options, it becomes easier to choose the right debit card and transaction account to suit your needs. So, what does the Citibank Plus Account and debit card have to offer?

Keep Fees Down

If you are trying to keep costs to a minimum, the Citibank Plus Account can certainly help. First up, you will pay no monthly service fee, with no monthly minimum deposit to worry about. That means you can use the account as frequently – or infrequently as you like – without having to worry about depositing a certain amount to avoid the monthly fee.

With this account, you can also save on transfer fees. On its site, Citi states it will not charge you any transfer fees to send or receive money, anywhere in the world. Of course, there is a caveat. It seems this fee-free transfer only applies to Citi-to-Citi transfers. However, if you have friends or family overseas that you regularly send money to, this could save you on fees if they also happen to have a Citi account.

And other fees? When using your Citibank Plus Account Debit Card to withdraw cash overseas, you will pay $0 ATM fees to Citibank – but bear in mind the operator may still charge a fee for the service it provides. As a nice touch, Citi has also done away with dishonour fees and overdrawn fees, which could help you save if you happen to find yourself dealing with either issue.

Use Your Own Money

One of the things that draws users to transaction accounts such as these is the fact that they offer a debit card that allows them to pay with their own money when shopping online and in person, both in Australia and around the world. The Citibank Plus Account is no different. Perfectly functional, it allows you to access your cash at ATMs and while shopping, putting a worldwide payment network at your fingertips.

Access Your Account 24/7

Obviously, you need to be able to keep a close eye on incomings and outgoings, which is why Citi provides easy monitoring and management of its Citibank Plus Account via the Citibank app. This allows you access to your account online anytime, anywhere and on any device, to keep on top of transfers, payments and more.

Take Advantage of Privileges

As an account with no monthly fees, the Citibank Plus Account keeps things fairly basic. However, alongside all of its standard features, it does offer accountholders access to the Citibank Dining Program. With this program, you will receive a free bottle of wine from award-winning wineries every time you dine at any partner restaurant and pay with your Citibank Debit Card.

What’s worth considering?

One of the great things about accounts such as this is there is very little small print to wade through. With that being said, it’s still a good idea to find out more about certain features before you use them, to find out if any fees apply, or if there’s anything relevant you need to know.

We didn’t find anything we particularly needed to highlight on this account, however, it should be noted that you must be over 18 years old to apply.

Why should you choose it?

If you’re in search of a simple transaction account that keeps fees to a minimum, the Citibank Plus Account Debit Card and its accompanying debit card could be for you. You won’t have to make a minimum deposit to benefit from no monthly fees, plus there are lots of other fees that have been swept off the table.

Basic in nature, the card does still offer extras in the form of complimentary wine when dining at partner restaurants within the Citibank Dining Program, plus access to Citi’s useful banking app and a global payments network.

What’s good

  • Free international money transfers from Australia to anywhere in the world
  • Instant money transfers when sending funds overseas to another Citibank account
  • No monthly account fees
  • Pay $0 Citibank fees for any overseas ATM or in-store transactions

What’s not so good

  • International Transaction Fee of 2.5% on the AUD dollar conversion of any transaction made in foreign currency.

How to use when travelling overseas – Singapore and Europe?

    • admin

      March 13, 2017

Hi Allan, you would use it wherever Visa is accepted using your pin. We are told that Citi won’t charge you for the withdrawal from any ATM overseas and you are not charged a Citibank fee or FX transfer fee. But the ATM provider will do – which will vary according to provider. However there are Citi ATM’s in Singapore. Citi charge an International Transaction Fee of 2.5% on the AUD dollar conversion of any transaction made in foreign currency. Hope that helps.

Hi. I hold a 457 visa with 3.5 years left. The Citibank application states I need to be a permanent resident. Am I excluded from applying? Thanks.

    • admin

      August 25, 2016

Hi Lee, it does state on the application page that you must be 18 years of age or older and a permanent resident of Australia. Though as this is a bank account / visa debit, I think you should still be able to apply. This maybe just some generic information that is provided. I would have a go and see what the outcome is. Could you please let me know how you go.

Wondering what fees and charges apply in regards to currency

Are there any other fees or charges applicable to online shopping in general?

Hi Marc, if you’re shopping online from a U.S. store there should be no foreign currency conversion fee. Fees or charges will be from the retailer only – i.e. delivery fees or potentially card surcharges.
