Suncorp Bank Debit Cards

The Suncorp VISA Debit card is a debit issued by Suncorp that offers to reduce transaction fees.

The Suncorp VISA debit card is available to a number of Suncorp transaction accounts such as the Everyday Basics account, the Everyday Options account, the 55 Plus account, and the Cash Management Account.  They are only available to Australian residents who are also over 18.

The big attraction of the Suncorp VISA card is that there is no annual fee.  There is also the ability to allow other people the ability to have a debit card linked to the account and this service is free.

It is possible to personalise a debit card.  This can either be done from an image library or the image can be uploaded by a user.  Restrictions apply to the images that can be used, mainly in order to prevent fraud and misrepresentation.  There is a fee charged for personalising the Suncorp debit card.

Like most other VISA cards the Suncorp card offers VISA’s zero liability guarantee.  This means that unauthorised transactions won’t be charged to the card holder, if the card holder tells Suncorp in good time and the card holder was not partly to blame for the transaction, by for example giving their debit card to the person who made the transaction.

As a VISA card the Suncorp card allows the card holder to use the card around the world.  There is a foreign currency fee of 2.5% on all purchases made in foreign currency.  VISA is the world’s largest debit and credit card company and is accepted in almost 30 million locations around the world.

The debit card also allows for over the phone and internet purchases in the same way as a credit card would, as long as VISA is accepted.  Unlike a credit card there is no separate account and so there is less chance for interest to accrue, although overdraft interest is charged.

The VISA card can be used in ATM machines as well as where credit cards can be used.  It is possible to change pins at some Suncorp ATMS.  The use of the card in non-Suncorp ATMs is subject to a transaction fee.

Suncorp cards are chip and pin, and have been since November 2009.  This means that instead of a signature, the debit card has to be verified by a pin number.  There is a chip in the debit card that allows this.
